The Venting Gap: Why Airflow Determines Bounce Quality

2026-03-10·5 min read

Here's something most homeowners don't know: an in-ground trampoline can bounce exactly like an above-ground one — or it can feel dead and noisy. The difference comes down to one design detail most installers ignore: the venting gap.

Why Air Needs to Move

When someone bounces, the jumping mat pushes a column of air downward into the pit. That air needs somewhere to go. On the rebound, air needs to rush back under the mat to fill the space. If air can't move freely, two things happen:

  • "Pad slap" noise: Trapped air creates a loud slapping sound as the mat compresses against it.
  • Dampened bounce: The air cushion acts as a shock absorber, reducing the rebound energy and making the trampoline feel sluggish.

The 12–18 Inch Rule

LOWLINE maintains a continuous 12–18 inch gap between the trampoline frame edge and the excavation wall. This creates an air channel around the entire perimeter, allowing air to escape and return freely during the bounce cycle.

Combined with a bowl-shaped excavation (wider at the bottom than the top), this design maximizes the air volume beneath the mat and ensures unrestricted airflow.

What DIY Installations Get Wrong

Most DIY in-ground trampoline failures involve digging a straight-sided pit and dropping the frame in with minimal clearance. The result is a trampoline that bounces poorly and makes excessive noise — often leading homeowners to conclude that in-ground trampolines "just don't bounce as well."

The truth: they bounce exactly as well when properly engineered. The venting gap is what makes that possible.

Engineering the Gap

At LOWLINE, the venting gap isn't an afterthought — it's specified in the excavation plan. Our bowl-shaped pits are designed with:

  • Minimum 12" clearance at frame level
  • 18"+ clearance preferred for larger trampolines
  • Bowl shape that widens toward the bottom
  • No obstructions (pipes, walls, backfill) in the air channel

The result: bounce quality identical to above-ground. No performance compromise. No noise. Just a trampoline that works as designed, hidden where it belongs.
