The Builder's Path

How LOWLINE Got Here

From a 1996 landscaping crew, to a backyard built for a daughter, to a national platform for the next generation of builders. This is how LOWLINE came to be.

Act One

The Trade (1996–2005)

LOWLINE Outdoor doesn't start in 2024. It doesn't start with a brand book, a website, or a logo. It starts in 1996 with a young man, a truck, and a small landscaping and irrigation company called Smith Systems.

For nine years, Smith Systems Landscaping and Irrigation was the trade school that nothing else could have been. There is a version of business education that happens in a classroom. And there is a version that happens when you're standing in someone's yard at seven in the morning, the property owner is watching, the irrigation system you installed yesterday isn't pressurizing the way it's supposed to, and you have to figure out — quickly, calmly, and without making it the customer's problem — what went wrong and how to fix it.

The work taught lessons the brand we run today still depends on. Drainage is everything. Customer-facing trade work is its own discipline. And finish quality — the way the sod gets restored, the way the edge holds, the way the install looks two years later — is the difference.

Act Two

The Backyard

Years later — different city, different house, different stage of life — the same builder found himself in his own backyard, working on a project for his daughter.

Every father knows this kind of project. You start with a simple intention — I want to build something good, here, for her, in this house. And you go looking for what you need: the materials, the contractor, the system, the design. And what you find, if you have the trade background to see it clearly, is a market full of compromises.

The above-ground options were the wrong shape and the wrong language for the property. The "premium" options weren't actually premium when you got under the hood. The crews willing to do the engineered version of the work were elsewhere. The category, in the form he wanted to build it, didn't really exist.

So he built it. That single project — designed and engineered the way Smith Systems would have built it twenty years earlier — became the seed of a brand. The neighbors saw it. They asked. The friends of the family saw it. They asked. And it became clear that what was missing wasn't demand. The demand was there. What was missing was a company willing to do the work at the standard the demand wanted to pay for.

That gap is what LOWLINE Outdoor is built to fill.

Today

What LOWLINE Outdoor Is

LOWLINE Outdoor designs and installs premium below-grade outdoor systems — in-ground trampolines, wellness retreats, storm shelters, concealment vaults, and custom subterranean installations — for high-end residential properties across Middle Tennessee and the Greater Omaha metro.

The Through-Line

What 30 Years Taught

Every system LOWLINE installs carries the disciplines that trace back to 1996. These aren't marketing lines. They're lessons paid for one job at a time.

Drainage is everything

A yard that doesn't shed water correctly fails — slowly at first, then catastrophically. Years of irrigation and grading work taught a single discipline: respect the water. Every LOWLINE system is engineered around drainage first.

Finish quality is the difference

The gap between a $4,000 install and a $14,000 install is rarely the materials. It's the finish — the way the sod gets restored, the way the edge holds, the way the install looks two years later. This is where we separate ourselves.

Customer-facing discipline

Most landscaping companies are good at the work or the customer relationship. The companies that survive learn to be good at both. Scope honestly. Price accurately. Deliver what you promised.

What matters most belongs below the line

The trampoline that disappears into the lawn. The sauna that sits flush with the deck. The vault that vanishes into the planting bed. The work that holds the home together is the work that doesn't announce itself.

Act Three

The Path

LOWLINE Outdoor has grown beyond the founder's two hands. The work in Nashville and Omaha is real. The brand has a national supplier program in place, a multi-region operating footprint, and a product line that's compounding faster than any single founder could install on their own.

And the next chapter is bigger than the company itself.

The Graduate Builder Initiative is the natural extension of everything that came before. It's a structured program for ambitious young builders — recent high school graduates, college students, post-college twenty-somethings, former athletes — who want to build a real business in a real market, with their hands, on a foundation that already exists.

The thesis is simple, and personal: what the founder of LOWLINE would have wanted at twenty-two is what we're now offering. Not as charity. Not as a franchise. Not as a pitch. As a real path to a real business that builds real equity.
